Note: Leopold, the older brother, who came home from the army on a special permit [to attend his father's funeral], was standing amongst the crowd in a uniform without a tear in his eyes. In later years, I found out that he had been accepted in the Budapest Academy of Fine Art but by then father needed him at home. My brother Leopold left for the front without father's consent. He was then 18 years old and his talent made him restless. He had made endless sketches and documented the happenings around him. Once Leopold was entrusted to watch over workers who were loading big wooden planks on open train carts at the railroad station to be shipped where they were needed. But instead of watching, he was making sketches of the movements of goings on at the railroad station. One of the workers while smoking what was forbidden there, threw away a lit match and the wood caught fire and everything burned down. Father must have reproached and this also prompted him to leave for the front where action was and made many sketches of the war. One appeared on a picture magazine cover the name of which was TOLNAY VILAG LAPJA. It depicted a soldier in the trenches facing the enemy with a machine gun in his hands and at the same time holding a picture of his family, wife, and two children. The title of the picture on the magazine cover was : THE LAST GLIMPSE. After father's funeral, my brother Leopold locked himself in the little house in the courtyard our grandfather had built where he kept his endless sketches on long shelves and burned them all in a little iron stove. And so ended a career maybe of a great artist. He never again wanted to do any art work after father was laid to rest. Eva Klein - Sister Of Leopold |
